The 7 essential steps

Preparation phase

This initial phase begins with a detailed explanation of the IVF process with egg donation, followed by a consultation with a gynaecologist specialising in IVF, who will be there to answer all your questions and ease any concerns.

Donor selection

At Sanus Clinic, the careful selection of the egg donor is a crucial step, based on very strict criteria:

  • Must already be a mother to a healthy child

  • Must be in excellent health with a known family medical history

  • Aged between 20 and 34

  • Must have at least a high school diploma

  • Must undergo genetic testing and screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

Based on these criteria, we select from our database the donor who best matches your physical characteristics and preferences. Our doctors then synchronise your menstrual cycle with that of the donor using medication, to ensure optimal conditions for embryo transfer.

Donor preparation

The donor undergoes hormonal treatment to stimulate her ovaries to produce multiple eggs.

Egg and sperm retrieval

Once the donor’s eggs are mature, they are retrieved through a minor procedure.
On the same day as the egg retrieval, the recipient’s partner provides a sperm sample, or frozen sperm is used.

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) and embryo culture

The eggs are fertilised in the laboratory with the sperm.
The resulting embryos are cultured in the lab for 2 to 5 days to select the most viable ones.

Embryo transfer

One or two selected embryos are transferred into the recipient’s uterus during a quick and painless procedure.

Pregnancy test and follow-up

A blood pregnancy test is carried out approximately two weeks after the embryo transfer.

If the result is positive, the pregnancy is monitored as it would be in a standard pregnancy.

Egg donation is an option when natural conception or IVF using the patient’s own eggs is unsuccessful. The following cases may then be considered:

  • Ovarian insufficiency or poor egg quality: The patient does not produce eggs, or the eggs are of poor quality or insufficient quantity.

  • Risk of transmitting genetic diseases: The patient is concerned about passing a genetic condition on to her child.
  • Need for genetic testing on embryos: The couple requires genetic testing on the embryos due to an increased risk of hereditary diseases.

In the Czech Republic, egg donation is anonymous. This means that neither the donor nor the recipient can know each other's identity. However, we provide all relevant medical and personal information permitted by law, such as:

  • Age

  • Physical characteristics (hair and eye colour, height, weight, etc.)

  • Blood type

  • Level of education

  • Medical history

Are egg donors compensated in the Czech Republic?

Egg donors in the Czech Republic receive compensation for their participation in the donation process, in accordance with current legal and ethical regulations.

It is important to note that the donor’s anonymity is preserved.

Is IVF with egg donation painful?

IVF involves several steps, and the level of discomfort can vary from person to person:

  • Ovarian stimulation: The hormonal medications used to stimulate the ovaries may cause mild side effects such as bloating, mood swings, and breast tenderness.

  • Embryo transfer: This procedure is generally quick and painless, although some women may experience mild cramping.

  • Luteal phase support: Hormonal medications, such as progesterone, may cause slight discomfort, particularly during injections.

Are there any side effects or risks associated with IVF using egg donation?

  • Mild side effects: Bloating, headaches, hot flashes, and mild cramping after egg retrieval.
