SPERM FREEZING

Male fertility and age: sperm freezing as a preventive option

Sperm freezing is an excellent option for men who wish to preserve their future fertility. As men age, sperm quality naturally declines, and environmental factors as well as lifestyle choices can also negatively impact sperm health.

Although sperm can be frozen at any age, it’s important to keep in mind that both the quantity and quality of sperm tend to decrease over the years. Therefore, it is often recommended to consider freezing at an age when sperm quality is optimal.

Thanks to modern cryopreservation techniques, sperm quality is preserved during the freezing process. About 80% of sperm successfully survive this process. This approach can provide peace of mind and the flexibility to plan fatherhood at the right time.

Who is sperm freezing for?

Men may choose to freeze their sperm for various reasons, to preserve their future fertility or for greater peace of mind.
The most common reasons include:

Medical reasons
You are undergoing cancer treatment or other medical therapies that may affect the quality of your sperm.
You are considering a vasectomy but want to preserve the option of fatherhood in the future.
Professional or personal reasons
You work or operate in environments exposed to harmful substances.
You practice high-risk sports or have a demanding professional activity.
You are postponing your fatherhood plans for professional or personal reasons.
Each of these situations may justify sperm freezing, offering peace of mind and flexibility for the future.

The sperm-freezing process begins with a consultation, a medical examination and a semen sample collection. As every patient is unique, we give personalised attention to each individual situation.
Step-by-step procedure:

Initial consultation

The first step is to contact our clinic and arrange an appointment for an initial consultation. During this meeting, you will meet the doctor and the clinic team.

You will receive detailed information about the sperm-freezing process, and we will answer any questions you may have.

Medical examination

Medical examinations are then carried out, including blood tests to rule out infectious diseases and assess your overall health.

Sperm collection

Sperm is collected by masturbation in a private collection room at our clinic, ensuring both confidentiality and comfort.
We make certain that the sample is obtained in an intimate setting that is as comfortable as possible.

Sperm analysis

Once the sample has been collected, a semen analysis is carried out to assess sperm count, quality and motility.

This information is essential for the subsequent stages of the process.

Sperm freezing

High-quality sperm is frozen by cryopreservation. The semen is stored in liquid-nitrogen containers at around –195 °C, where it remains safely preserved until needed.

Sperm freezing offers men the opportunity to plan their parenthood at their convenience by safeguarding their reproductive potential.

For any questions or further information about the process, please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange a personalised consultation.

FAQ: Everything you need to know about sperm freezing

What is the ideal time to freeze sperm?

There is no upper age limit for sperm freezing. However, it is generally advisable to do so as early as possible—particularly if there are factors that may impair sperm quality in the future.

What is the success rate of sperm freezing?

The success rate of sperm freezing is generally very high, with approximately 80–90 % of spermatozoa surviving the freeze–thaw process. The quality of the sperm after thawing is usually sufficient to achieve successful fertilisation.

Are there any risks associated with sperm freezing?

Sperm freezing is generally regarded as a safe procedure with minimal risk. Unlike egg freezing, it does not involve hormonal stimulation or surgical egg retrieval, so there are no associated side effects from those interventions. However, the freeze–thaw cycle can result in a reduction in sperm motility. Despite this, most thawed samples retain sufficient quality for successful fertilisation.

What are the options if I never use my frozen sperm?

If you ultimately never need to use your frozen sample, you have several choices:

  • Donate to another couple
  • Donate for scientific research
  • Destruction
